What hypnosis is — and isn't

Hypnosis is not a state where consciousness is switched off. It is the natural mental state you enter when you lose yourself in a book or film.

A natural mental state

In hypnosis, there is physical and mental relaxation. During this relaxation, the inhibiting and suppressing functions of the conscious mind visibly decrease — opening space for change.

Hypnosis is not sleep

The brain shows distinct wave patterns during sleep that do not occur during hypnosis. You still feel your body in the chair, hear sounds around you, can move and yawn, and can exit hypnosis whenever you wish.

What happens in a session?

In a session, guided imagery is used to place you in a calm, pleasant environment (for example, a beach). In this deep relaxation, you are taught a self-hypnosis cue you can use later on your own. The first session produces light hypnosis; with each session you develop the capacity to go deeper.

Some areas where hypnosis can help

  • Vaginismus, low libido, painful intercourse
  • Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation
  • Smoking cessation, weight management
  • Exam anxiety, performance anxiety
  • Phobias, panic disorders
  • Bedwetting in children
The most important factor for successful hypnosis is the client's own wish for help. Internal motivation always beats external pressure.
